Hello 👋
I’m acting on an impulse here (and publishing this from my iPhone — sorry in advance for any typos). But I just had a thought about fielding questions from you lovely readers about various topics that I think I can provide advice on (or at least share my personal experience). Depending on your responses, I might add an advice column to my Substack! 🙃
Warning ⚠️ Advice will probably be served with a side of humor because life’s messy and we should laugh about it when we can.
Here’s some shit I’ve been through/accomplished:
I’ve been through 3 divorces — first my parents, then my mom and step dad, then my own divorce at 33.
I moved to another country when I was 33 — cheers to expat life (and starting over!).
Started an e-commerce business with zero experience when I was 29, grew it to 6 figures in sales (not profit!) then burned out.
Pivoted my career to freelancing — mainly content marketing and writing and make a decent living on my own terms. (+ set up and built the business in a new country — NL).
I’m currently losing my mother to Alzheimer’s — boy oh boy, when the parent/child roles reverse, it is intense! Then there’s the grief. FML.
All of my romantic relationships have been with men from a different country/culture — I don’t like the easy route (I guess). But it’s interesting!
I lived out of a carry on travel backpack for 3 months while traveling around Europe.
I make (and sometimes sell) handmade beaded jewelry.
I’m an occasional (amateur) photography.
I’m a child-free almost 40 year old woman. I’m turning 39 on Sunday. Sounds weird — I feel 29.
I’m somewhat financially savvy and own 2 apartments — one in NYC and one in Amsterdam and I did it all by myself (I mean without a partner — I must share that I had some help from family, but I did most of the saving). Also, they’re not glamorous homes, but it’s better than tossing rent out the window!
I have over 15 houseplants and they’re all still alive.
I make a mean Asian stir fry and Thai curry chicken.
Phew! This is why it’s so hard for me to find a niche. Ha! I’m sure I missed something.
Feel free to submit your questions in the comments or if you prefer to remain anonymous, send me a DM!
I’m excited to hear from you! (But also don’t mind the sound of crickets.)
Cheers,
Alexis
Happy almost birthday!! Here's to also being a Jack of all trades! 😉💜
I follow you because you are a gifted storyteller. So less about "advice", and more about what you observe when the parts of your life collide, align, intersect, make you feel big (or small), what makes you laugh and cry, and how that inevitably shapes your hopes and dreams. As long as you're writing, I'm all in!
(And happy birthday! 🎉)
