Hello, and happy Wednesday eve! The list of “things I’m into lately” on my iPhone Notes app is growing, so it’s time to share a few of my latest finds and rediscoveries with you. Who knows? I might make this a regular series, but I don’t want to promise anything. See you in the comments!
1. Sofa Saturdays 🛋️
This one is self-explanatory. It involves spending copious amounts of time on the sofa doing whatever the fuck you feel like doing. Reading, writing, binge-watching, drinking, eating, you name it. But the key here is not feeling bad about it, which is one of the 39 things I’ve learned in the last 39 years.
2. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft 📚
I finished On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King in about two days. Great read if you’re looking for no bull shit writing tips. I enjoyed learning more about Stephen King and how he started his writing career. One line that stood out to me the most was, “Write with the door closed and rewrite with the door open.” First drafts should always be for you. Just let it out and then keep your reader in mind while editing. Ideally, thinking about only one reader. Stephen King always writes for his wife, Tabitha. She’s the first one to review all his work, according to his book. I think that’s sweet.
3. Nobody Wants This 📺
During one of my most recent Sofa Saturday sessions, I plowed through Nobody Wants This on Netflix. I’m a sucker for a cheesy rom-com. It’s about a woman (I think in her mid to late 30s) who always finds something wrong with the men she dates (surprise, surprise) until she meets a modern-day rabbi (who’s super cute, by the way — played by Adam Brody). They can’t resist each other, but it will probably never work, considering she’s not Jewish. I don’t want to spoil it, so I’ll stop now.
I like this “kissing” song from the show. You’ll get why I’m calling it the “kissing” song if you watch the series. If you’re also a sucker for a good rom-com, you’ll love it.
Have you already watched Nobody Wants This? Let’s chat about it in the comments!
4. The Artist’s Way ✍️
I’m on week six of The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I’m happy to report that I’ve written my morning pages consistently for six weeks. That alone feels like success to me. I picked up the book because I want to gain the confidence to explore new writing styles and share my “art”, but I’ve been surprised to see that following the weekly exercises has also helped me rediscover other creative projects and hobbies I once enjoyed as a kid. Things like painting, jewelry making, or doodling.
Lately, I’ve also found myself on impromptu artist dates. The most recent one was a quick trip to the market to pick up a brownie mix. After I mixed the batter and popped the tray in the oven, I licked the wooden spoon just like I did as a kid. My mom used to leave a little extra batter for me and the experience today brought me back to sitting in our kitchen watching her make her famous double-batch brownies. These little moments we remember are so special, at least I think so. Especially as our parents age and our roles change.
I’ll eventually get around to the rest of my Artist’s Way reflections, but here are weeks one and two:
5. My new “Creative Stories” series 📣
I launched a new series on my Substack called “Creative Stories”. I interview and feature people doing cool, creative shit. Here are the first two editions featuring
from and from — more to come soon!Until next time,
Loved this, so funny, I've finished Nobody Wants This last Monday, and loved it as well. It's the perfect rom com series. Secondly, the song you shared was the first one in my 'discover weekly' spotify list 🙈 And thirdly, The Artist Way is waiting on my desk to be read 🧡 curious about your interview series as well! Gonna check it out, (I love Lucy her werk)!
I’m a rom-com fan. And I’ll watch Nobody wants this next.
