Love this dose of reality. I find every needy excuse in the world to have my nest clean and organized before I write. It’s nice to know I’m not the only human with this tendency.
Thank-you. I sometimes chastise myself for not getting much on paper, forgetting the total process. Also some days you are in the zone and words just flow and lose track of time. When this happens I go with it!
Exactly! I do the same! Also, once I finally get rolling, sometimes I don’t want to stop, so I take advantage of that moment and write other pieces too.
I also start working as soon as I get up or as close to it as I can manage. I watched a YouTube video a while ago about getting into flow state where they recommended that because you’re still close to being in theta brainwave state https://youtu.be/XJOsPyyYork?si=_McKCT3UHUi2at2J
I used to do that! But then I’d come up for air and realize it was 2pm and I hadn’t showered or brushed my teeth. Haha. So I still reserve mornings for writing, but I have a cappuccino, read a little, take a shower, and put some normal clothes on first. I’m def more of a morning person. I’ll check the link you shared! Thank you. 🙏🏻
Writing and publishing on Substack or Medium is such an emotional rollercoaster. I do all the same things as you, including the staring out the window. I like to also include a short mental breakdown after each post that goes out, questioning my life's choices and my ability as a writer. I find it helps to get me in the mood for the next piece.
Thank you for publishing this raw, transparent article. Leaving your desk and returning to read your work only to realize it's not as bad as you thought when you were scratching your head earlier is such a good feeling.
Kind of makes you want to leave your desk more often 😊

Maaaan I love reading other writer's experiences of writing and I especially love when they so relate to mine. Yes to all of this, although my procrastination definitely doesn't involve cleaning or laundry putting away, haha. I wish I was a productive procrastinator, I just hate domestic chores even more 😂🙈 xx
Time being a limited resource for me shuttling between clinics and motherhood, I don’t have the chance to procrastinate. Because any time I find when I’m off clinics and my kid rests or plays with his dad, I automatically get into writing zone. Limits spark creativity they say. I think that’s what is happening to me as well.
That is true! I took a writing course with @Joanna Penn Cooper and we had only 10 minutes to write some of the assignments. It’s interesting to see what you can come up with! I guess like work, writing takes up the time you give it!
I am in awe of how many useful things you do while you procrastinate. Am glad you also realise the crucial role of the window in writing. Although mine is threatening to charge an access fee. Says I take advantage.
Windows can be very greedy. They keep writing articles about exploitation, and how their purpose in life is not to provide distraction for procrastinating writers..
I thought you said you fold and put away your laundry and then your boyfriend, not you’re boyfriend’s 😂
Hahaha hahaha. Maybe I need to edit that to say that I put him away. That’s a good one. lol
🤣 I laughted so loud when reading this my boyfriend got confused
Success!!! 😹

Glad you can relate! 💛
Can relate to finally sitting down just to pee and refill my water bottle again!
It’s the worst!

What a refreshing read. Thanks for sharing your routine with us. Reading your posts first in the morning is a fantastic way to start the day.
Thanks, Daniel! Glad you’re enjoying.
Love this! Binaural beats on noise cancelling headphones 🎧 really helps me to focus - I use brain.fm (I also live alone which ofc is not advice! 🤣)
Also, thanks for the tip! I’m going to check that out.

Thanks! I used Leonardo AI.

Haha. There is always that feeling of “Will people actually like this?” when you hit publish or schedule a post. But I try not to let that stop me!

That is a very good point! But seriously, taking time away from my writing always helps!

That checklist you mentioned about actually writing sometings is truly remarkable and relatable
I’m glad you find it relatable! Anything you would add?
Yeah mother calling me to help her with chores which I seem to cannot reject
Oooo that’s a tough one! You’re a good daughter. hehe.
I know right😂

Hahaha. Fair enough. They’re relaxing for me. I’m one of THOSE people. Haha.

hahaha... We better do something about that. Starting out the window should be free for all! 😹

Your morning routine works well for you. That is your mental warm-up before you write.
What’s your morning routine like?
Similar to yours minus the folding and putting awa the clothes.
Lucky you.
