Hey,
I think it’s important to occasionally take a step back and reflect on all the good in our lives. I should probably do this more often, which is why I recently shared a joy list (and I plan on doing it more often).
I’m also curious about the small moments of joy in other people’s lives, so I’m inviting other Substackers to share their joy lists too.
I hope you enjoy the first edition.
’s joy list
Guest post by Cassie Wilkins
Hey friends,
Like many, life feels pretty tough right now, so I’m doing my best to lean into the good. Here are some of the little things bringing me joy right now.
1. I’m trying to live a little more slow, intentional, and joy-filled life
Building a business and being a freelancer is hard - especially when you also add in other challenges, like a parent with late-stage Alzheimer’s on the other side of the world. For the past few years, I’ve found myself “on” all the time and unable to switch off, but I’ve recently felt like I’ve hit a bit of a wall with everything.
I’m using that as an excuse to slow everything down, become much more intentional, and live for all the little joys instead of feeling like I’m constantly in reaction mode to everything going on around me. It feels like the perfect energy to take into summer this year!
2. I’m soaking up the last of wildflower and waterfall season
Here in Perth, winter is the wettest time of year. As a Brit, I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the rain, but I love waterfalls and wildflowers, and spring brings both in abundance. I’m trying to get outside as much as I can and make the most of both before the summer heat dries up the falls and flowers and means it’s beach weather instead.
3. I’m prepping for visitors
This week, my sister, her wife, and my niece are coming to visit me in Australia. In the 11 years since I left my homeland no one has come to visit (it’s a long way and expensive, so it’s understandable!), but I’m very excited to have my first guests! I’m looking forward to taking them on a road trip and showing them some of my favourite spots.
4. I’m starting a writing club!
It’s still in its early days, but I have always wanted to start a writing club and figured there’s no time like the present. As a writer and creative mentor, I know how lonely writing can be and how much of a difference a supportive writing community can make, so I decided to make one! I’m currently getting everything teed up to start in early 2025 (via Substack) and I’m super excited about it.
Wishing you lots of joy, too.
